Sharkwerks released this render yesterday, asking their subscribers if Porsche should remake the 914 as an EV . Honestly, I think that’s the only way the 914 and 718 could coexist. There’s just no market for two mid-engine sports cars unless one has a completely different drivetrain.
Speaking of different drivetrains, why are there no FR sports cars in Porsche’s lineup? The 718 could easily coexist alongside a 2+2 front-engine sports car…perhaps a modern 944?!? And there’s absolutely no excuse for not having a modern 928 to challenge the 8-series, AMG GT, Portofino, DB11, etc.

That 914/Taycan hybrid looks great.

i like that 914, the 944 looks just like an old one with rounded edges (which I think is what that rendering is)

A little 914 EV c ould be quite appealing.
Unfortunately, batteries are heavy...
Also, EVs are great as daily
commuters, but Porsches are being used the best on backroadtrips with lots of curves and not many gas stations (or charging ports). EVs are not ideal for day dedicated to
driving in the hills/canyons/mountains.

A new 928 to go up against the AMG GT, E class coupe, aston, and LC500 would go very nicely. I know they're not all exactly in the same class but they could go right in the middle and it would be great

I think they’ll likely just add a hybrid/PHEV/EV to the 718 lineup at the next refresh (2022?) , with Taycan-style lights, you’d end up with something looking similar to the above render . Adding a targa option would be interesting, but would take some engineering to find a place for the top. Maybe a manual version of the 911 Targa wizardry?
I think the 911 is already the new 928, but a Panamera Coupe/929 might be nice as well.

Agreed.....a PHEV version of the 718 would be cool. Basically a baby 918.
I’ve driven both the Cayenne E-hybrid and Panamera plug-in. Insane performance when using all the power, but still ~15 miles of battery-only range.
However, shrinking $100,000 of technology into a $50,000 718 will be tough.

As evidenced by all the EVs that are actually selling are $40k
minimum
and not small cars.

agree - it’d be cool but no market currently. And that hasn’t been Porsche’s thing for the last couple decades - their business model is high margin vehicles.

Since partnerships are all the rage these days, the only way would be to partner with someone.
The bigger issue is Porsche has priced themselves out of the market for a cheaper sports car. This was brought up on the Pca page on 718 sales down, and someone had a good rep once of average boxster price in 15 years has almost doubled is where the 911 was 10 years ago.
In the VW empire, a cheap Porsche is right where the TT should be 40-45k. The problem is in being a limbo situation like the brz.

Yes because the world needs more mid enginedness no exceptions. You're right though, the market would never support it unless it was an EV.

No,
No they shouldn’t.
Let VW, Audi, or other brands handle that.
Porsche doesn’t need to be everything to everyone, they need to be themselves.
Companies that spread too thin lose focus... like BMW... sedan, coupe, gran coupe, cuv on every series group.

They should make a 912.
The 911 is fat bloated fatness. A performer? Sure, yes, and hugely expensive and much larger and fatter than before.
The 912 was better balanced then the 911 and if it ever had equal brakes and suspension+tires , would have outhandled the 911. Just like the 914 would have as well.
912 in origional size, just like the miata has mostly been it’s whole life. flat-4 turbo. I also think Ferrari should mkae a 4 liter v-12 just like they did before in a 2-seat california. Modern bike tech would mkae it a 500hp engine turning 11,000 daily driven rpm. Oh but they cant do that....
